Carrie and the Opioid Crisis Action Network
Have you heard about the Opioid Crisis Action Network?
Over 72,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2017, up 7% from 2016 and double the total from a decade ago. The Opioid Crisis Action Network (OCAN) was founded in January, 2018, by Heather and Larry Arata after the overdose death of their 23-year-old son, Brendan, to research and lobby for solutions to this public health emergency.

The couple interviewed health care professionals who treat those suffering from substance use disorder and found a consensus that a continuum of long-term care and medication - assisted treatment regimens lead to a significant reduction in costly and often deadly relapses. Well run sober living facilities have been found to be a particularly effective way to help recovering individuals find their way to better lives. They need to be supported and regulated.

At the state level, PA Senate Bill 446 and PA House Bill 119 have passed and await reconciliation. These bills would effectively regulate sober living facilities. Carrie would definitely support these bills.  They were passed before her opponent was sworn in, so he did not vote on them. The reconciliation vote is coming up, though.

Carrie is listed among the candidates supporting the Opioid Crisis Action Network. Her opponent is not.

Governor Tom Wolf has announced that Pennsylvania will receive a $55.9 million State Opioid Response (SOR) grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The grant was sought aggressively by Wolf’s administration and awarded to the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), which will administer the grant.

Let’s make Carrie available to help bring some of that aid to the 68th District!

Your Newsletter Editor’s Recent Letter to the Gazette (with a misprint of her own corrected here.)
To the Editor:

This week Pennsylvania passed legislation further limiting convicted domestic abusers’ immediate access to firearms.

Under previous state law, convicted abusers had 60 days to surrender firearms and were permitted to leave them with relatives or friends.  So, during the two months after conviction, when domestic rage often still runs hot, convicted abusers were permitted to retain their weapons. After that time, they were permitted to consign them to persons who might well share an abuser’s view that the abuser’s family members did not deserve to live.

The new law, HB2060, requires convicted abusers to turn weapons over to the police within 24 hours. This obviously affords much more protection to the victims of domestic violence.

68th District Senator Joseph Scarnati voted in favor of the new legislation.

68th District Interim Representative Clint Owlett voted against it.
Representative Owlett is up for election this November 6. That day, voters will have their chance to express their opinions of his positions.

Remember - we have no money from the national or state parties. No family money. No gas company money. When Carrie gets to Harrisburg, she will owe it all to you, the community that supported her.
